Where it came from
The Sedgemoor Witch was introduced as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for Magic: The Gathering, released in 2021. The card represents the Witherbloom College, one of the five magical institutions within the set's academic setting, which focuses on the duality of life and death through nature and decay. It was specifically issued as a promotional variant, showcasing unique art intended to reflect the dark, swamp-based aesthetic of the Witherbloom house.
The artwork for this specific promotional release was illustrated by Johannes Voss. Voss sought to capture the character's mastery over pestilence and blood magic, utilizing a somber, atmospheric color palette that highlights the gothic influences present in the Strixhaven design brief. The piece was well-received by players for its technical detail and its ability to visually communicate the card's mechanical function of generating creature tokens whenever a spell is cast.
