Seismic Assault was released in 1998 as part of the Exodus expansion, the final set in the Rath Cycle of the Magic: The Gathering card game. Designed during an era when Wizards of the Coast was aggressively expanding the game's mechanical depth, the card was intended to provide a powerful, repeatable land-destruction outlet for red decks. Its design reflects the set's focus on high-impact enchantments that could swing the board state in a single turn.

The card features artwork by Dermot Power, who created a visceral, chaotic scene that perfectly encapsulates the spell's mechanical function of hurling earth at an opponent.
