Where it came from
Seize the Spotlight was released as part of the New Capenna Commander set in 2022. The card was designed to support the set's central theme of urban intrigue, political maneuvering, and organized crime in the Art Deco-inspired metropolis of New Capenna. As a red enchantment, it encourages players to capitalize on their opponents' card-drawing activities, fitting the set's narrative focus on greed and high-stakes social competition.
The illustration was crafted by artist Lie Setiawan, who leaned into the 1920s aesthetic that defined the New Capenna expansion. The visual language utilizes sharp geometric shapes and a vibrant, theatrical color palette meant to evoke the glitz and danger of the setting's ruling families. Upon release, the card was received as a flavorful, albeit niche, utility piece in Commander formats, noted for its ability to punish opponents who prioritize aggressive resource replenishment.
