Where it came from
Seize the Spotlight was released in 2022 as part of the 'New Capenna Commander' set, a collection designed to accompany the Magic: The Gathering expansion Streets of New Capenna. The card reflects the set's central aesthetic of 1920s Art Deco-inspired urban crime syndicates, specifically focusing on the glamour and high-stakes social climbing characteristic of the plane's flavor.
The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who utilized a bold, dramatic style to capture the tension of a public confrontation. The design intent was to provide a 'group hug' style effect that rewards players for engaging with opponents' actions, fitting the political and chaotic nature of multiplayer Commander gameplay.
