Where it came from
Selective Snare was released in 2018 as part of the Guilds of Ravnica set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set marked a return to the fan-favorite plane of Ravnica, a world governed by ten distinct, color-coded guilds, with this specific card associated with the blue-aligned House Dimir. It was designed to serve as a versatile utility spell for limited formats, allowing players to bounce nonland permanents back to their owner's hand while providing additional value if the card was cast during the opponent's turn.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Bastien L. Deharme, who opted for a shadowy, atmospheric aesthetic that fits the espionage theme of the Dimir guild. By depicting a hooded figure amidst a backdrop of Ravnica’s gothic architecture, the artwork reinforces the guild’s identity as a secretive cabal of information brokers. The piece was well-received by players for successfully capturing the darker, noir-inspired tone of the setting, maintaining the visual consistency expected of contemporary Magic card design.
