Where it came from
The Seraphic Greatsword was released in 2020 as part of the Commander Legends set, a collection specifically designed for the multiplayer Commander format. The card reflects the set's thematic focus on legendary creatures and high-fantasy combat, serving as an artifact equipment that rewards players for aggressive play by creating powerful Angel tokens.
The artwork was commissioned from illustrator Magali Villeneuve, a prominent figure in the Magic: The Gathering community known for her expressive, painterly style. Her design emphasizes the celestial and holy nature of the weapon, utilizing a radiant aesthetic that aligns with the card's mechanical ability to summon reinforcements from the sky. Upon its debut, the card was received as a flavorful, high-impact equipment choice for white-aligned decks, praised for its ability to stabilize board states in long-form matches.
