Where it came from
Serenity was originally printed as a rare card in the 1994 Antiquities expansion, designed during Magic: The Gathering's formative years to offer a powerful board-wipe effect specifically targeting artifacts. The card was conceptualized to balance the game's artifact-heavy meta at the time, functioning as an efficient reset button that reflects the game's early focus on thematic, high-impact spells.
The version included in the Classic Sixth Edition, released in 1999, marked a significant shift in the card's presentation. While it retains the original mechanics, the aesthetic was updated to match the core set's modernized card frame and standardized layout. The illustration, created by artist Quinton Hoover, is celebrated for its ethereal, calming depiction, which contrasts sharply with the card's destructive gameplay purpose.
