Where it came from
The Serf token was released in 2016 as part of the Eternal Masters set, a collection specifically curated to provide players with access to powerful and scarce cards from the game's long history. The token is generated by the card 'Sengir Autocrat,' a classic black creature card originally introduced in the 1994 Homelands expansion. By including this updated token, Wizards of the Coast allowed players to represent these specific creatures during gameplay in a format that honored the vintage aesthetics of the original card's lore.
The artwork for this token was provided by Greg Staples, an illustrator known for his atmospheric and moody contributions to the trading card game. His design for the Serf emphasizes a grim, downtrodden appearance, fitting the thematic role of these creatures as expendable minions within the game's gothic horror narrative. The piece was well-received by the community for its thematic consistency and its ability to provide a polished, unified look for players utilizing Sengir Autocrat in limited or constructed formats.
