Where it came from
The Wurm token, specifically card number 13 from the Eternal Masters set released in 2016, was produced by Wizards of the Coast to support gameplay mechanics that generate creature tokens. Eternal Masters was designed as a curated set intended to bring high-value and strategically significant cards back into circulation, and the accompanying token suite served to provide players with the physical markers necessary to represent board states created by cards like Pelakka Wurm or Penumbra Wurm.
The illustration for this token was created by artist Mathias Kollros, who has contributed extensively to the visual language of Magic: The Gathering. Kollros aimed to capture the visceral, terrestrial nature of a giant subterranean creature, utilizing a dynamic pose and earthy tones to ground the fantastical beast in a recognizable, albeit hostile, environment. Within the community, these tokens are noted for their clean, thematic aesthetic that differentiates them from earlier, often more stylized iterations of the Wurm creature type.
