Where it came from
The Serpent-Blade Assailant card is part of the Art Series released alongside the March of the Machine set in 2023. These cards were specifically produced as collectible, showcase-style items, featuring full-art illustrations without the traditional gameplay borders or text boxes found on standard Magic: The Gathering cards. They were designed to highlight the high-fantasy aesthetic of the multiverse-spanning Phyrexian invasion storyline.
The artwork for this piece was rendered by artist Marta Nael, who was commissioned to capture the swift, predatory nature of the character within the chaotic conflict of the set. Like others in the Art Series, the card was distributed in collector boosters to provide players and enthusiasts with a high-fidelity look at the visual development of the game, receiving positive reception for its atmospheric composition and integration into the broader artistic narrative of the Phyrexian expansion.
