Where it came from
The Invasion of Kamigawa art card was released in 2023 as part of the March of the Machine Art Series for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. These cards are distributed as promotional items in set boosters, designed to showcase the high-fidelity illustration of specific cards from the main set without the overlay of gameplay text or borders. The artwork depicts the climactic Phyreixan invasion of the plane of Kamigawa, reflecting the set's narrative focus on a multiverse-wide conflict.
The illustration was created by artist Daarken, a veteran illustrator in the fantasy gaming space. In crafting this piece, the artist aimed to balance the aesthetic fusion of Kamigawa’s traditional Japanese-inspired architecture with the biomechanical horror of the Phyrexians. The piece was well-received by the player community for its detailed scale and the dramatic contrast between the familiar landscapes of the plane and the encroaching corruption of the invaders.
