Where it came from
The Serpent Generator was released in 1994 as part of the Legends expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. As the first set designed primarily by players who had been invited to contribute to Wizards of the Coast, Legends introduced the concept of legendary creatures and multi-colored cards to the game, significantly broadening the strategic complexity of deck construction during a period of rapid early growth for the hobby.
The card features artwork by Anson Maddocks, a foundational artist for the game whose macabre and distinctively organic style helped define the visual identity of early Magic sets. The illustration depicts a surreal, skeletal construct consistent with the set's themes of ancient, arcane artifacts. Mechanically, the card serves as a token generator, allowing players to create colorless snake creatures, a design choice meant to encourage board presence and resource management within the mid-game context of the time.
