Where it came from
The Serra Paragon was released as part of the Magic: The Gathering product line Secrets of Strixhaven Commander in 2022. This card was designed as a powerful recursive engine for white-aligned decks, reflecting the ongoing mechanical effort by Wizards of the Coast to grant the color more agency in retrieving low-value permanents from the graveyard. It serves as a reimagining of classic angelic design tropes, emphasizing themes of protection and restorative grace that have defined the Serra archetype since the early days of the game.
The card's artwork, illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, captures the ethereal and authoritative essence associated with Serra’s lineage. Villeneuve opted for a luminous, sweeping composition that highlights the angelic figure's connection to the light, aiming to evoke a sense of solemnity and mechanical resilience. Upon its debut, the card was widely received by the Commander community as a significant staple, praised for its ability to maintain board presence through sustained value generation.
