Where it came from
Serra's Hymn was released in 1998 as part of the Urza's Saga expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set is widely recognized for introducing the enchantment-heavy mechanics that defined the block and for its significant impact on the game's competitive landscape during that era. The card itself draws upon the lore of Serra, a powerful planeswalker whose influence and religious iconography serve as a central theme for white-aligned cards within the game's broader mythology.
The card's illustration was provided by artist Matthew D. Wilson, who contributed extensively to the visual identity of the late 1990s expansions. His design for this card utilizes a clean, ethereal aesthetic intended to evoke the serenity and divine protection associated with Serra's followers. Upon release, it was received as a flavorful addition to decks centered around enchantment synergy, remaining a nostalgic piece for those who collected during the Urza's Saga period.
