Where it came from
Setessan Champion was introduced in the 2020 Magic: The Gathering set Theros Beyond Death, a return to the Greek mythology-inspired plane of Theros. Designed by the Wizards of the Coast development team, the card features the 'constellation' mechanic, which rewards players for playing enchantment spells. This design choice serves as a mechanical homage to the set’s focus on the pantheon of gods and the pervasive influence of divine enchantments within the plane.
The artwork for this specific promotional version was created by illustrator Eric Deschamps. His depiction emphasizes the Champion’s role as a protector of Setessa, highlighting the character's strength and connection to the verdant, wild landscape of the city-state. Upon its release, the card was widely received by players as a powerful staple in green-based enchantment decks, becoming a sought-after piece for its utility in both competitive and casual formats.
