Provenance

Where it came from

The Setessan Champion was originally introduced in the Theros Beyond Death expansion as a Rare creature, designed to synergize with the enchantment-heavy themes of the Theros plane. Its mechanics reward players for playing enchantment spells by drawing cards and gaining power, a design choice that reflects the philosophical and martial traditions of the fictional city-state of Setessa. This particular version is a reprint featured in the Commander Masters set, which curated iconic cards to bolster the popular Commander format.

The illustration was crafted by artist Anna Steinbauer, who is recognized for her ethereal and detailed work within the Magic: The Gathering universe. Her depiction of the Champion emphasizes the grace and strength of a warrior-philosopher in tune with the natural magic of her home. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players focusing on enchantment-themed decks, as it provided a consistent source of card advantage that remains highly relevant in competitive play.
