Where it came from
Severance Priest was released as part of the Dragonstorm Promos set associated with the Tarkir block in Magic: The Gathering. This specific card was distributed as a promotional item during the release cycle of the Khans of Tarkir expansion, a set centered on a time-traveling narrative and the warring factions of a plane defined by its dragon-worshiping culture.
The card features artwork by Clint Cearley, whose illustration emphasizes the ecclesiastical and somewhat ominous aesthetic of the Mardu and Abzan-aligned ideologies within the set. Designed as a functional white-mana creature, it was crafted to provide specific utility within the limited format environment of the time, gaining modest recognition for its role in deck-building strategies centered on sacrifice and graveyard interactions.
