Where it came from
Severance Priest was released as part of the Tarkir: Dragonstorm promotional set, distributed through Wizards of the Coast's organized play channels during the Khans of Tarkir block era. These specific promotional cards were often issued as participation rewards or top-placing prizes at local game stores, reflecting the era's focus on incentivizing in-store community play through exclusive, alternate-art, or foil-treated collectibles.
The card features artwork by Clint Cearley, who was commissioned to capture the distinct aesthetic of the Orzhov Syndicate, despite the character's thematic alignment with the rotating sets of the Tarkir block. The design intent was to maintain visual continuity within the high-fantasy milieu of Magic: The Gathering while providing collectors with a unique, marked promotional version of the base card, which served both as a functional game piece and a sought-after aesthetic variation.
