Where it came from
Severed Legion was released in 2002 as part of the Onslaught expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a common card within the set, it reflects the block's heavy mechanical focus on the 'morph' ability, which allowed players to cast creatures face-down as colorless 2/2s for a generic mana cost, creating an environment of uncertainty and bluffing on the battlefield.
The card features artwork by Christopher Moeller, a prolific illustrator for the game during this era. His design utilizes a dark, atmospheric palette to emphasize the card's theme of necromancy and decay, aligning with the visual identity of the black mana color alignment as it was depicted during the early 2000s. The card was designed as a functional piece of limited play, serving as a tactical tool for aggressive black decks.
