Provenance

Where it came from

False Cure was released in 2002 as part of the Onslaught expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set focused heavily on the mechanics of morph and tribal themes, and this card was designed to punish strategies that relied on gaining large amounts of life, serving as a tactical counter-measure against life-gain decks that were prevalent in the competitive landscape of the time.

The artwork for the card was created by artist Daren Bader, who has contributed to numerous sets throughout the history of the game. Bader aimed to capture the visceral irony of the card's effect, depicting a distorted, magical healing process that inflicts pain rather than relief, effectively reflecting the card's function as a mirror-image penalty for beneficial actions.
