Where it came from
Shabraz, the Skyshark was originally introduced in the Commander 2020 expansion, serving as a flagship creature for the Timeless Wisdom deck. Designed by Wizards of the Coast as part of the Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths release, the card reflects the set's central theme of mutation and monstrous elemental beasts. It was crafted to synergize specifically with deck-drawing mechanics, rewarding players for cycling through their libraries with a scaling power boost and a unique aerial evasion capability.
The illustrative work for Shabraz was created by artist Jesper Ejsing, who captured the character's avian-shark hybrid aesthetic with a high-energy, dynamic composition. Within the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem, the card is recognized for its thematic cohesion and its role as a partner commander. The version appearing in The List—a curated selection of reprints—maintains the original design while providing a modern avenue for players to acquire the card for their personal collections.
