Where it came from
Shabraz, the Skyshark was introduced in the Commander 2020 set, specifically within the Timeless Wisdom deck released by Wizards of the Coast. Designed to synergize with cycling mechanics, the card reflects the set's focus on the Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths plane, where the creature's massive scale and avian traits mirror the environment's emphasis on larger-than-life beasts. Mechanically, it serves as a payoff for drawing cards, rewarding players who lean into draw-heavy blue and white strategies.
The artwork for Shabraz was created by the illustrator Slawomir Maniak, who focused on capturing the creature's aerial majesty against a sprawling, cloud-swept backdrop. Maniak intended for the scale of the shark to feel imposing yet graceful, utilizing fluid lines to suggest motion through the air. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the Commander community for its utility as both a powerful flying combatant and a reliable source of life gain and card advantage when paired with its partner, Brallin, Skyshark Rider.
