Provenance

Where it came from

The Shadow Kin card was released in 2021 as part of the Coven Counters Commander deck for the Magic: The Gathering set Innistrad: Midnight Hunt. The card was designed to support the set's graveyard-centric mechanics, specifically focusing on the blue-black color identity that rewards players for interacting with their own library and creature-heavy strategies.

The art was commissioned from illustrator Lucas Staniec, who captured the haunting, ethereal nature of the Shadow Kin through a muted palette and distorted, indistinct figures. The card was well-received by the Commander community for its ability to create variable power creatures, serving as a versatile tool for mid-game stabilization and late-game offensive pressure in tribal and graveyard-themed decks.
