Where it came from
Shadow Puppeteers was released in 2023 as part of the Wilds of Eldraine Commander set, a collection themed around the fairy-tale-inspired plane of Eldraine. The card fits within the 'Fae Dominion' deck archetype, which focuses on Faerie creature synergy and disruptive board control. Mechanically, it plays into the set's exploration of trickery and shadow, allowing players to manipulate the power of their creatures to create unpredictable combat scenarios.
The artwork was illustrated by Dominik Mayer, whose distinct, high-contrast style often features elongated figures and dramatic, theatrical lighting. Mayer was tasked with capturing the essence of the 'Puppeteer' concept, emphasizing the feeling of unseen forces pulling the strings of the battlefield. The design was received as a flavorful addition to the set, effectively translating the folklore-heavy tone of Eldraine into a functional tool for Commander players.
