Where it came from
Shadow Puppeteers was released in 2023 as part of the Wilds of Eldraine Commander set, a collection themed around high-fantasy folklore and the whimsical, often dark, narrative tradition of the plane of Eldraine. The card was designed to support the 'Fae Dominion' archetype, focusing on tribal synergies for Faeries and the manipulation of game states through temporary creature modification.
The artwork was commissioned from artist Justine Mara Andersen, who employed a stylized, atmospheric aesthetic to capture the elusive nature of the shadow-dwelling creatures. The design team intended for the card to serve as a high-impact finisher in limited and casual commander formats, and it was generally well-received by players for its ability to grant flying and shroud to the user's board while debuffing opponents.
