Where it came from
Shadow-Rite Priest was released as part of the Dominaria United promotional set in 2022. It functions as a specialized cleric card designed to enhance tribal synergy within the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem, specifically catering to players utilizing black-mana strategies focused on the cleric creature type. The card was distributed through various retail promotional channels to support the release of the Dominaria United expansion.
The artwork for this card was provided by veteran illustrator Igor Kieryluk, who has contributed to the game for over a decade. His design choices emphasize the dark, liturgical aesthetic associated with Phyrexian-aligned clerics, utilizing a stark color palette to highlight the figure's sinister clerical vestments. The card was received by the player base as a niche but effective tool for casual and Commander-format decks centered around cleric tribal mechanics.
