Where it came from
The Cruelty of Gix was originally released as a rare enchantment in the Dominaria United set in 2022, serving as a narrative piece that depicts the Phyrexian antagonist Gix during his infiltration of the plane. The card design leans into the dark, mechanical aesthetic of the Phyrexians, utilizing body horror imagery to illustrate the card's mechanical function of reanimating fallen creatures and disrupting an opponent's hand.
The specific promo version, numbered 87s, features distinct alternative art that emphasizes the gothic and sinister nature of the Phyrexian invasion. Like other cards in the Dominaria United promo cycle, this version was distributed through Wizards of the Coast's organized play initiatives, intended to reward players for participation in local game store events and to provide collectors with a more stylized, thematically dense visual representation of the game's evolving storyline.
