Shadowmage Infiltrator

Shadowmage Infiltrator was originally designed as an Invitational card by professional player Jon Finkel, who earned the right to work with Wizards of the Coast to create a card in his own likeness after winning the 2000 Magic Invitational. The design was intended to bridge the gap between aggressive play and card advantage, effectively combining the utility of a creature with the powerful draw mechanic of Ophidian, a card Finkel famously favored. Its release in the Odyssey set established it as a staple of competitive play for years.

The version from the Masters 25 set, illustrated by Tomasz Jedruszek, reimagines the original concept with a more modern artistic approach while maintaining the iconic silhouette of the character. Jedruszek’s interpretation emphasizes the rogue-like nature of the shadowmage, utilizing dark, moody lighting to capture the essence of a dimir-aligned infiltrator. This inclusion in the 25th-anniversary set served as a tribute to the game's history, showcasing cards that defined specific eras of play for both casual and professional players.
