Shadowmage Infiltrator

Shadowmage Infiltrator was originally designed as the 2000 Magic: The Gathering Invitational card, a process where the tournament winner earned the right to design a card for the game. Jon Finkel, the winner that year, sought to create a creature that captured his personal playstyle: one that offered consistent card advantage and evasion. He worked closely with R&D, specifically Rob Dougherty and Mark Rosewater, to balance its powerful triggered ability with a fragile body, resulting in a card that quickly became a staple in competitive blue-black decks.

The Masters 25 printing, released in 2018, celebrates the twenty-five-year history of the game by featuring cards from every major set. This specific iteration retains the original, iconic illustration by Kev Walker. Walker, a long-time contributor to the game, utilized his signature dark, atmospheric style to capture the rogue-like essence of the character, emphasizing the shadowy, elusive nature of the creature to perfectly complement Finkel's original vision of a stealthy infiltrator.
