Where it came from
Shadrix Silverquill was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages set, specifically featuring as a promotional card for the Silverquill college. The card represents one of the five Elder Dragons of Strixhaven, each of which serves as the founder of a magical discipline focused on contrasting philosophies. The design centers on the duality of the Silverquill aesthetic, which emphasizes both high-status oratory and ruthless political manipulation, represented by the creature's ability to offer boons to opponents while simultaneously advancing the player's board state.
The artwork was illustrated by Jason Rainville, who was tasked with conveying the balance between the regal, ink-like magical essence of the Silverquill mages and the physical presence of a dragon. Rainville’s composition aims to reflect the collegiate environment of Strixhaven, grounding the mythological creature within the setting's academia. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the Commander community for its political versatility, allowing players to negotiate with opponents during games, which aligns with the social and strategic identity of the Silverquill faction.
