Where it came from
Semester's End was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed as a rare sorcery that reflects the academic theme of the set, specifically capturing the chaotic yet restorative feeling of closing out a term at a magical university. Mechanically, it allows players to exile their permanents and return them to the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter, echoing the concept of a magical reset or an intensive study session.
The promotional version, bearing the collector number 27p, features unique art and a distinct expansion symbol, distinguishing it from the standard set release. The visual direction for the Strixhaven promos leaned into the high-fantasy, scholarly aesthetic of the institution, with the artwork emphasizing the ephemeral nature of magical effects. It was received by the player base as a versatile tool for flicker-style strategies, valued for both its thematic resonance and its utility in various formats.
