Where it came from
Shalai and Hallar were released as part of the March of the Machine Commander set in 2023, representing a narrative pivot where disparate characters from across the Magic: The Gathering multiverse united to defend against the Phyrexian invasion. The design team sought to capture the collaborative energy of the event by featuring two established characters—the angel Shalai and the elf Hallar—on a single card. Mechanically, the card was designed to reward players for placing +1/+1 counters on creatures, synergizing with existing archetypes centered on growth and damage output.
The artwork, illustrated by Aleksi Briclot, emphasizes the partnership between the two figures, using warm lighting and dynamic framing to highlight their synergy. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the Commander community for its versatility as a commander or as a powerful inclusion in synergy-focused decks. It reflects a design trend in modern expansion sets toward partner-style mechanics that consolidate distinct character identities into a unified strategic package.
