Where it came from
Shambling Remains was released in 2009 as part of the Conflux expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the second set in the Shards of Alara block, Conflux focused on the collision of previously separated world fragments. The card was designed to embody the Grixis shard, a plane defined by death, decay, and the manipulation of mana through necromancy.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Christopher Moeller, who captured the creature’s unsettling, undead aesthetic consistent with the Grixis theme. Mechanically, the card was designed with an 'unearth' ability, a keyword mechanic central to the set that allowed players to bring creatures back from the graveyard for a single turn of combat. Upon its release, it was utilized primarily in limited formats as a functional utility creature for aggressive black-aligned decks.
