Where it came from
Shameless Charlatan was released in 2022 as part of the Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate expansion. The card was designed to support the 'Choose a Background' mechanic, a thematic nod to the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop source material that allows players to combine a legendary creature with a background enchantment to create a unique character identity. Mechanically, it allows a creature to transform into a copy of another, reflecting the deceptive nature of a shapeshifting charlatan in a fantasy setting.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who has contributed extensively to the Magic: The Gathering visual identity. Kieryluk focused on the fluid, uncanny nature of the transformation, utilizing a color palette and stylistic flair that distinguishes the card from standard creature-focused artwork. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players within the Commander format for its versatility and the narrative depth it adds to deck building, serving as a staple utility piece for blue-aligned decks.
