Where it came from
Shameless Charlatan was released as part of the Magic: The Gathering Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate set in 2022. It serves as a Background card, a unique card type introduced to work specifically with legendary creatures possessing the 'Choose a Background' ability. This design mechanic was intended to evoke the multi-classing and character customization systems found in Dungeons & Dragons, allowing players to build flavorful, narrative-driven commander decks.
The card features artwork by illustrator Livia Prima, who captured the deceptive and flamboyant nature of a charlatan. The design leans into the thematic duality of the Dungeons & Dragons rogue archetype, emphasizing charisma and transformation. Within the gaming community, the card was well-received for its versatile utility in Commander, specifically for its ability to turn a commander into a copy of another creature, effectively acting as a permanent, repeatable shapeshifting effect.
