Where it came from
Shape of the Wiitigo was released in 2006 as part of the Coldsnap expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was unique for its design goal of functioning as a spiritual successor to the Ice Age block from the mid-1990s, focusing on mechanics that emphasize cold-themed environments and resource management. The card itself represents the terrifying, cannibalistic spirit from Algonquian folklore, adapted to fit the harsh, wintry landscape of the plane of Dominaria.
The artwork for the card was provided by illustrator Greg Staples, who utilized a visceral, atmospheric style to capture the creature's monstrous, shape-shifting nature. The design sought to evoke a sense of dread and physical transformation, reflecting the card's ability to grow in power as it consumes its prey. It was received by the player base as a niche, thematic inclusion for tribal-themed decks, appreciated for its flavorful depiction of North American mythology within the broader fantasy framework of the game.
