Shapers' Sanctuary

Shapers' Sanctuary was released in 2017 as part of the Ixalan expansion, a set centered on a Mesoamerican-inspired plane dominated by four distinct factions: the Sun Empire, the Brazen Coalition, the River Heralds, and the Legion of Dusk. Designed to support a green-aligned strategy, this enchantment was crafted to provide card advantage whenever a creature the player controls becomes the target of an opponent's spell or ability, reflecting the reactive and protective nature of the River Heralds' magic.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who utilized the set's vibrant, lush jungle aesthetic to depict the mystical, defensive energies of Ixalan. Upon its release, the card was viewed as a niche sideboard option in constructed formats, specifically tailored to counter removal-heavy decks. It remains a notable example of Ixalan’s focus on creature-centric interaction and the thematic representation of indigenous magical traditions within the game’s mechanics.
