Where it came from
Siren's Ruse was released in 2017 as part of the Ixalan expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set focused on an exploration-themed plane inspired by Mesoamerican history and colonial-era nautical adventures, featuring factions like the Brazen Coalition pirates and the Sun Empire. This card functions as a blue instant that exiles a target creature and returns it to the battlefield, a mechanic designed to trigger 'enter the battlefield' effects while offering temporary protection from removal spells.
The card’s artwork was illustrated by Johann Bodin, who rendered a Siren of the Brazen Coalition attempting to deceive or distract an opponent. The aesthetic emphasizes the vibrant, high-seas atmosphere of Ixalan, utilizing a palette of deep blues and teals to evoke the ocean’s depth. Upon release, the card was received as a functional utility tool in Limited formats, particularly valued for its ability to blink creatures to reset their loyalty or dodge targeted removal during pivotal combat exchanges.
