Where it came from
The Shard of the Void Dragon was released in 2020 as part of the Warhammer 40,000 Commander deck series for Magic: The Gathering, a collaborative effort between Wizards of the Coast and Games Workshop. This set was designed to integrate the dark, gothic science-fantasy aesthetic of the Necron faction into the mechanics of Magic, providing players with iconic units from the tabletop wargame.
The card features an illustration by Victor Adame Minguez, who sought to capture the monolithic, ancient terror of the C'tan shards. The design emphasizes the character's mastery over technology and metallic forms, aligning with its role as a powerful artifact creature. Upon release, the card was widely received as a staple for artifact-themed decks due to its potent ability to protect itself and weaken opponent resources.
