Where it came from
The Shard of the Nightbringer card was released in 2022 as part of the Warhammer 40,000 Commander set for Magic: The Gathering. This set marked a significant crossover collaboration between Wizards of the Coast and Games Workshop, designed to introduce the grimdark lore of the Necrons, Tyranids, and Imperium of Man into the trading card game. The card represents a powerful C'tan Shard, a celestial entity central to Necron mythology.
The artwork for this specific card was commissioned by Games Workshop and adapted for the Magic: The Gathering frame, focusing on the imposing, spectral silhouette of the Nightbringer. The design team aimed to capture the essence of the entity as a 'god of death' figure, using stark contrast and dark hues typical of the Warhammer 40,000 aesthetic. Upon release, the card was well-received by both Warhammer tabletop enthusiasts and Commander players for its flavorful integration of Necron mechanics.
