Shauku's Minion

Shauku's Minion was released in 1996 as part of the Mirage expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, Mirage served as the inaugural set of a block-structured release schedule and introduced mechanics like phasing and flanking. The card reflects the set's dark, atmospheric exploration of the continent of Jamuraa, a region heavily inspired by various African cultures and aesthetic traditions, moving away from the European high-fantasy tropes that dominated the game's earlier years.

The card features artwork by artist Pete Venters, who became one of the game's most prolific illustrators. Venters was tasked with bringing the horror of the black-aligned cards to life, focusing on the necrotic and unsettling imagery associated with the legendary vampire Shauku. In the context of gameplay, the card was received as a straightforward common-rarity creature designed primarily for the limited draft environment, typical of the balanced but grounded approach to creature design found in the mid-nineties expansion sets.
