Shellephant

Shellephant was released in 2017 as part of the Unstable set for Magic: The Gathering. As a silver-bordered expansion, Unstable was designed by Wizards of the Coast to prioritize creative experimentation, humor, and mechanics that exist outside the rigid rules of tournament-legal play. The set was conceived as a way to explore unconventional design spaces and provide a lighthearted experience for casual groups, drawing inspiration from the long-standing tradition of 'Un-sets' that break the fourth wall of the game.

The art for Shellephant was created by illustrator Matt Cavotta, who has a long history of contributing iconic visual styles to the game. The design captures the creature's whimsical nature by physically depicting the elephant-turtle hybrid concept, reflecting the set’s focus on inventive, hybrid creature types. Upon release, the card was well-received by players who appreciated its thematic integration into the eccentric world of Unstable, where the fusion of disparate animal forms was a central aesthetic conceit.
