Where it came from
Sheoldred's Edict was originally released as part of the Phyrexia: All Will Be One expansion in 2023, serving as a functional piece of removal magic that reflects the brutal, perfection-seeking ideology of the Phyrexians. The card represents the character Sheoldred, the Praetor of the Seven Steel Thanes, whose focus on ego and sacrifice is captured in the spell's mechanical requirement for opponents to choose their own casualties.
The version from the 'Secrets of Strixhaven Mystical Archive' style or variant frames reflects the aesthetic influence of Wizards of the Coast's ongoing project to reimagine iconic spells through diverse art styles. These archival treatments are designed to evoke a sense of ancient, magical scholarship, often utilizing intricate filigree and thematic typography to make the cards appear as relics plucked from the library of the Strixhaven University of Magic.
