Where it came from
Sheoldred's Edict was released in the 2023 Magic: The Gathering expansion Phyrexia: All Will Be One. The card depicts a mechanical decree issued by Sheoldred, one of the five Praetors of New Phyrexia, reflecting the set's central narrative theme of the Phyrexian invasion of the multiverse. Mechanically, it serves as a powerful removal spell that forces opponents to sacrifice creatures or planeswalkers, leaning into the color black's traditional focus on forced sacrifice and corruption.
The artwork was created by illustrator Campbell White, who utilized a dark, visceral aesthetic to capture the imposing nature of Sheoldred’s influence. The design emphasizes the oppressive, industrial horror synonymous with the Phyrexian faction. Upon its release, the card saw immediate adoption in multiple formats, including Pioneer and Modern, where players praised its efficiency and versatility as a flexible answer to threats that are otherwise difficult to interact with via conventional damage-based spells.
