Where it came from
Shifting Loyalties was released in 2015 as part of the Fate Reforged expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set focused on the block's time-travel narrative, exploring a pivotal moment in the history of the plane of Tarkir. This particular card was designed to reflect the political instability and warring factions defining the set's central conflict, where players could manipulate the battlefield by moving equipment or enchantments between creatures.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk. Known for his work across several Magic sets, Kieryluk opted for a dynamic composition that emphasizes the tactile and somewhat volatile nature of the spell. Upon release, the card was received as a niche utility tool, valued primarily for its specific interaction with the set’s unique mechanics rather than broad competitive play.
