Provenance

Where it came from

Shifting Shadow was introduced in the Commander 2017 set, which focused on tribal mechanics across four distinct decks. Released by Wizards of the Coast as part of the C17 Draconic Domination deck, the card was designed to support creature-heavy strategies by providing a recursive, randomized threat generator that fits the chaotic and thematic nature of Commander gameplay.

The card features artwork by Chase Stone, who opted for a surreal, ethereal aesthetic to match the title. The design centers on a spectral, shape-shifting entity emerging from darkness, effectively capturing the card's mechanical reliance on revealing and cycling creatures from the library. It was generally well-received by players for its flavor and its utility in decks that benefit from frequent creature deaths.
