Shimmering Wings

Shimmering Wings was released in 1997 as part of the Tempest expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, this set was designed to focus on high-impact, flavorful mechanics and a more streamlined approach to gameplay following the complexity of earlier releases. It emerged during a pivotal era for the game, where the art direction began to lean into distinct, high-fantasy aesthetics to differentiate the expanding card pool.

The card features artwork by the illustrator Rebecca Guay, whose ethereal and soft watercolor style became a signature look for Magic cards in the late 1990s. Guay was tasked with depicting the enchantment's magical effect, creating a dreamlike visual that stood in stark contrast to the grittier, darker tones prevalent in other cards of the era. Her contributions to the set were well-regarded by the community for their unique artistic texture and departure from traditional fantasy realism.
