Winds of Rath

Winds of Rath was released in 1997 as part of the Tempest expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, this set was designed to shift the game’s mechanics toward more aggressive combat and distinct board control. The card, a powerful sorcery that clears the battlefield of non-enchanted creatures, was intended to reward players for building decks focused on Auras, a strategy that was underrepresented at the time.

The card’s artwork was illustrated by D. Alexander Gregory, whose style contributed to the dark, high-fantasy aesthetic prevalent in the mid-90s Magic sets. The design aimed to capture the theme of a powerful atmospheric upheaval originating from Rath, the artificial plane central to the Tempest storyline. It was generally well-received by players of the era as a necessary tool for balancing board states, and it remains a staple piece of memorabilia from the game's formative years.
