Shock was first introduced in the Stronghold expansion in 1998, designed as a foundational burn spell for red decks that offered efficient, low-cost damage. By the time it was reprinted in the Eighth Edition core set, it had already established itself as a staple of the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem, prized for its flexibility in targeting either creatures or players.
