Where it came from
The Shrine of Loyal Legions was included in the 2014 Modern Event Deck, a product released by Wizards of the Coast intended to provide players with a competitive, ready-to-play entry point into the Modern format of Magic: The Gathering. The deck was built around a 'White-Black Tokens' archetype, leveraging cards that generated creature tokens to overwhelm opponents, with the Shrine serving as a specialized enchantment that rewards the player for playing white spells by accumulating counters.
The card features artwork by Mike Dringenberg, who aimed for a stark, mystical aesthetic that fits the high-fantasy themes of the Mirrodin Besieged set, where the card originally debuted. Upon its release in 2011 and subsequent inclusion in the 2014 deck, it was noted for its unique slow-burn utility, though it generally occupied a niche role in casual and fringe competitive builds rather than becoming a mainstay of the top-tier tournament scene.
