Where it came from
Zealous Persecution was originally printed in the Alara Reborn expansion in 2009, designed to showcase the multicolored nature of the Alara block. The card features art by Dan Dos Santos, who depicted a grim, focused scene of Orzhov church knights enforcing their will. Its design is centered on the Orzhov Syndicate, a guild characterized by black and white mana, reflecting the union of life-draining and rigid, militaristic control in the game's lore.
The 2014 Modern Event Deck version of the card served as a functional reprint specifically chosen to support a BW Tokens strategy. This pre-constructed deck was released by Wizards of the Coast to provide players with a competitive entry point into the Modern format. The card's inclusion was highly regarded for its utility, as it functions simultaneously as a buff for the player's own small creatures and a removal spell for the opponent's weaker units, embodying the efficient, punishing playstyle of the deck.
